My amusement has been heightened by the fact that many of us, once we have discovered our talents and finessed them a bit, produce something of quality and then immediately expect the whole world to come rushing for us once we have made it.
We become discouraged to the point of quitting altogether when we are brought face-to-face with the inevitable lack of praise and appreciation which confronts us. One of the reasons why this situation exists is the fact that we are ignorant of the principles of repertoire building, and that is one of the most important reasons for this situation.
What does it mean when I refer to repertoire as a term? A repertoire can be defined as the combination of past experiences, training, knowledge, and ideas that you bring to the table that represent you as a person and your level of talent. This can be referred to as a resume or a curriculum vitae.
In the musical profession, a repertoire is a set of specific compositions that have been learned, performed, and are ready for performance on a regular basis.
The repertoire of a chef includes dishes that have been perfected and are capable of being prepared with confidence.
The repertoire of an actor is the list of roles that he or she has learned or acted in over the years.
Each of us must build a solid repertoire for each of our talent areas as they grow and improve.
It is sometimes necessary to increase the quantity in order to achieve higher quality. As a result, if you try something over and over again, you will become better at it over time.
You will probably see a significant improvement in the quality of what you make or do if you give several attempts and each will likely improve.
The more perseverance and diligence you put into anything, the better it tends to become.
If you have a dozen ideas in mind, then one of them is probably going to be good, so that's one way to get a great idea.
Writing dozens of songs is the best way to become a successful songwriter; one of them will eventually be a hit.
It is important that you take several shots if you want to take a striking photograph. There will be one of those shots that will turn out to be a great shot.
If you write only one book, you will not be able to become a successful author.
In the end, quality is ultimately a product of quantity.
Did you know that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were finally able to reach the top of Mount Everest on their seventh attempt? It's true! A seventh attempt has been made! A total of six attempts had been made previously. Have they failed attempts? You may say Yes but to me, each previous endeavor brought them one step closer to the summit.
Do you know why some musical groups appear on the scene with a splash but disappear quickly? They are sometimes called "one-hit" bands. They record one interesting song and jump into the arena, but they have no repertoire behind them. So they fall from the "top ten" back into obscurity.
Someone who has built a substantial repertoire is ready when the right opportunity arrives.
Despite not being recognized or appreciated at the moment, don't stop developing and optimizing your talents.
Keep building quality by increasing quantity.
It is a matter of time before your talent is recognized, appreciated, and generously rewarded.
